Nissan announce it will cut hundreds of jobs at Sunderland plant

NISSAN has announced it will cut hundreds of jobs at its Sunderland car plant.

The Japanese firm said the layoffs relate to a lack of demand for its diesel cars and a switch in production to newer models.

Leaf, Juke and Qashqai models are built at the north-eastern site, which has about 7,000 workers.

A Nissan spokesperson said: “We will be managing a planned short-term reduction in powertrain supply and plant volumes at NMUK (Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK) in line with our 2018 Business Plan.

“We are now discussing these operational changes with our employees.”

Last week Jaguar Land Rover announced it will cut production and shed about 1,000 temporary workers at its Solihull plant.

The company said the lay-offs were due to “continuing headwinds impacting the car industry”.
